Doerfer received a multi-year NASA contract in 2012 to provide the primary material handling transporters for use in assembly of NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) Rockets. The transporters will carry the core stage rockets and components through full assembly, engine test, and launch preparation at NASA’s plants in Michoud, LA, as well as Stennis Center, MS, and will travel with the rocket on its ocean transport in order to also conduct operations at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL.
At approximately 1.4X the size of the NASA’s previous Saturn rocket, the new SLS Rocket represents the largest and most powerful rocket ever built and is the cornerstone of NASA’s future space programs. SLS will enable high capacity commercial and international cargo missions, and is also planned to carry the Orion Space Module to conduct long range and deep space extended human travel beyond earth orbit, culminating with eventual manned space flight to the planet Mars.
